So, I’m participating in Movember to raise awareness and funds for cancer. I’m really hoping to help this awesome cause, so I’m going to be giving away free links to any awesome people who donate to Movember through my page. It’s pretty win-win. Donate to support an end to cancer and get a free backlink to your site.
Exciting news! My blog post on providing SEO-friendly alternate content for Flash is up at SwellPath. One of my more gimmicky nerdgasms, you initially view the post as a Flash movie but if you disable Flash (pretend you’re a search engine spider), then, BAM! Alternate content!
It’s been a while since the last post, so there’s a lot to write yet a lot that won’t be said. I’ll stick with highlights.
Flash, SEO, and SWFObject2 at SwellPath.com
In the next week or so, keep your eyes peeled for an awesome new post at SwellPath (the sickest SEO agency in Portland) about using SWFObject2 to make Flash SEO-friendly (well, as friendly as it can be). I harp on the SEO/Flash disconnect a lot and I bet it can get quite annoying. 😉 This post breaks down the process of making your Flash SEO-friendly, so hopefully this kind of thing won’t seem too daunting or resource-heavy.
A while ago, I flew out to Denver, CO to teach an SEO basics class for a national non-profit. It was an awesome experience and the feedback I got was amazing. Well, turns out word spread and now I have the opportunity to continue in the same vein by giving a webinar to another non-profit group. It’ll be at the end of November, so it’ll be a ton of fun to fit all the prep work on top of my current workload. Lol. Honestly, I could talk for hours about basic SEO best practices and tips, but I want to put in some time to make something that’s super helpful. Anyway, wish me luck.
Not a typo. I’ll be growing a mustache for the whole month of November. Movember happens every year and is a campaign to raise awareness for prostate cancer (also others types, but with a focus on that one in particular). I, and the team I’m on (the Aviator Navigators), will be growing out our sweet ‘staches and trying to get donations to support this awesome charity. Checkout my page if you want to learn more.
Those are my major updates. Wait. I also got my Google Analytics Individual Qualification (GAIQ), so that’s pretty rad too. It means I’m awesome at Google Analytics, though not as rad as Greg Holiat.
Finally, I’m Tweeting a lot more. Follow me or hit me up: @mike_arnesen
Captain Awesome, out.
Flash content isn’t great for SEO (let alone usability) because search engines can’t crawl the content in it. Thankfully, SWFObject2 can help out by delivering alternate content when a user doesn’t have Flash installed, a search engine visits the page, or when someone deliberately turns Flash off just to spite webmasters who still use it on their sites. So, I stayed up way too late working on the theme for mikearnesen.com. I think I like what I have at this point, I just haven’t done any work for cross-browser compatibility. If you want to check out how it’ll eventually look, try the latest version of Chrome. It looks hot in that!
My latest coding project has been taking up all of my free time lately. Honestly though, that’s not a whole lot of time. I’m typically super busy and my free time consists of
- my morning light rail commute to downtown (about 45 minutes)
- my evening light rail commute home (about 45 minutes)
- any time I can carve out by staying up late or getting up early (about 30 minutes)
But considering how much other stuff I do on a daily basis, two hours of coding is pretty crazy. [Read more…] about New PHP project
