I applied to speak at MozCon on Monday afternoon. For those that don’t know, SEOMoz had an amazing idea to shuffle around the MozCon 2012 schedule to allow four lucky guests from the community to speak at the event. I’ll be honest: When I first read the announcement, I got more excited than a Star Wars fanboy who’d just been given a chance to go to dinner with George Lucas. I’m a shameless fan of the Moz, so I’m fine with admitting that.
After I recovered from the excitement overload, I started panicking over what I could possibly come up with as a topic to speak on. They were asking for something that was super actionable, engaging, and that hadn’t been covered in the existing schedule. Obviously, it also had to be a topic that hadn’t been beaten to death elsewhere. I spent hours thinking about it every day (and night) for the next week. Then, a few days ago, on the way home from work, it came to me. I’ll hold off on telling you what the topic is until later on in this post.
So, I wanted to explain briefly why I applied to speak at MozCon in the first place.
As of yesterday, I removed the mobile Safari browser from my iPhone’s main bar and replaced it with Yahoo Axis. Why would I ever do such a thing? Well, as an SEO specialist, it’s my job to understand new developments in search, whether that’s a change in an algorithm, how social signals are impacting search results, or what a new search app is like. I want to fully understand Yahoo Axis.
For those that don’t know, Yahoo Axis is Yahoo’s new mobile and desktop app. It’s supposed to be an enhanced tool to make search…better? Well, I’ll be completely honest: I don’t much care for Yahoo as a search resource. On a personal level, Google consistently provides me with higher quality and more relevant results. If you haven’t heard of CloudFlare
, they’re a web service that integrates with your site to increase site speed and performance while protecting against spam and attacks. I recommend checking them out for yourself (they have free plans) but here are seven reasons why I think CloudFlare rules.
One of the coolest things about CloudFlare is that it caches every part of your website (HTML, CSS, Javascript) for optimized and fast delivery. Caching also ensures 100% up time. The other day, I was working on my site and uploading some files through FTP when I realized that my connection was out and I couldn’t reconnect to the server. It turned out that Dreamhost was having issues with the server my sites were on, but thanks to CloudFlare they were delivering a cached version of my site to any users who requested it. My pet peeve of the year is people who don’t understand what Pinterest is for. Ever since Pinterest started blowing up, and especially after the word got out that Pinterest is great for SEO, everyone just jumped on the Pinterest button bandwagon; many jumped on without really knowing why.
What was their logic? “Pinterest is popular and I heard it’s good for SEO. I need Pinterest buttons on my site.”
